The Inbox
The unified review surface: sidebar presets, tracklists and charts, Research, filters, store links, keyboard-driven classification, auto-advance.
The Inbox is the first tab of the macOS app and the place you'll spend most of your time. It's one unified surface for everything waiting on a decision: a sidebar on the left holds your Mobile Shazams, your Tracklists and your Charts; the main pane on the right is the review list — search, filters, playback, and the keyboard loop. Your selected scope and sidebar preferences persist across launches.
The sidebar — Mobile Shazams
The MOBILE SHAZAMS section has three fixed presets, each with a live count:
- All — every single-track capture (iOS Shazams, shortcuts, shares, pastes, drops).
- Needs Research — captures that haven't been looked up on a streaming service yet. Not yet matched; not yet playable.
- Needs Decision — captures that have been researched and are ready to listen to, but that you haven't classified yet.
These are workflow filters, and together they define the loop: new captures accumulate in Needs Research; you research a batch; they move to Needs Decision; you classify them; they leave the Inbox.
The sidebar — Tracklists
The TRACKLISTS section lists every tracklist you've created (see Importing tracklists & playlists), newest context first, each row showing its source and date plus count pills: an amber "12r" means 12 tracks still need research; a neutral "8" means 8 researched tracks await a decision; a green ✓ means the tracklist is fully handled.
Two controls live on the section header:
- + — adds a new tracklist (opens the Add Tracklist sheet).
- Hide Done / Show Done — by default, tracklists with nothing left to do are hidden to keep the sidebar short. Toggle to see everything.
Right-click any tracklist for its management menu:
- Mark Completed / Mark Incomplete — manually flag a tracklist as finished (it gets a seal badge and is hidden under Hide Done, even if a few rows are technically unclassified). Fully reversible.
- Rename — change the tracklist's name.
- Clone Tracklist — duplicate it, e.g. to re-research with different settings.
- Delete Tracklist — hides the tracklist from the list; its tracks and search results are preserved underneath.
The sidebar — Charts
The CHARTS section lists the Beatport charts you follow (see Importing tracklists & playlists). Each row shows when you last refreshed it and how many of its tracks are still undecided — e.g. "↻ 3d ago · 12 new"; right after you follow a chart it reads "↻ now".
- + on the section header opens the Add Tracklist sheet on the Chart card.
- Right-click a chart for Refresh, Mark Completed / Mark Incomplete, Rename, and Unfollow. Unfollowing keeps its tracks, your decisions and their matches.
- Hide Done hides a chart only when you've marked it completed yourself — a chart keeps moving, so it's never "done" on its own.
The scope header
Whatever you select in the sidebar — a Shazam preset or a tracklist — the header above the track list shows where you are: the scope title, a status pill (for tracklists: Extracted / Searched / In Progress / Completed / Failed), a type badge (Mobile Shazams, Audio file, Audio URL, CSV, Tracks URL, Playlist, Chart), the track count, and a link to the source when there is one.
The header also holds the two research actions:
- Research — the main event. CatchIt! asks which platform to search — Apple Music, Spotify, or both if you're connected to both — then runs the search cascade across the scope. By default it only researches tracks that haven't been researched yet, so it's cheap to run repeatedly.
- Re-search all — throw away existing matches and research everything from scratch. Useful after connecting a second streaming service, or when a match came back wrong.
For a chart, the header shows "Refreshed 2d ago" (or "Never refreshed") and a ↻ Refresh button instead of the two research actions — chart tracks are matched when you follow and refresh, so there's nothing to research.
Research writes a per-platform Match onto each row — matched on Apple Music, on Spotify, on both, or "not found" on either. The row pills make the state visible at a glance; a row with no pills simply hasn't been researched yet.
Filters, search, and sort
The second header row filters the visible list:
- Search box — type into "artist / title / label" to narrow the list live.
- Status — All / Unclassified / Keep / Reject. Keep shows your greens, Reject your reds; Unclassified is the default working view.
- Previous — All / Hide / Only. Filters on whether a track was already classified elsewhere in your library (the dedupe history). Hide skips things you've already judged in another tracklist; Only shows exactly those.
- Chart (charts only) — All / Charting / Left. Left shows the tracks that dropped off the chart since you followed it.
- Sort — position / artist / title for tracklists; newest / artist / title for Mobile Shazams.
Filters reset when you switch scope, and the empty-state messages tell you when a filter (rather than an actual empty inbox) is why you see nothing.
Store and search links
Every row has a Links column with four one-click searches for the track's artist and title: Bandcamp, Beatport, YouTube and Google. Useful when a track isn't on your streaming service, or when you already know you want to buy it.
Classifying — the keyboard loop
Select a track, listen, decide:
| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| Enter | Green — "I'd play this in a set." Auto-advance to the next track. |
| Space | Red — "Not for me." Auto-advance. |
| ← / → | Skip back / forward 15 seconds |
| Shift + ← / Shift + → | Skip back / forward 60 seconds |
| Cmd + V | Paste a URL into the Inbox to capture a track |
| Cmd + Click (on a row) | Toggle multi-select |
| Shift + Click (on a row) | Range select |
| Cmd + A | Select all visible rows |
| Esc | Clear the selection, or close any open sheet (Save to Playlist, Add Tracklist, etc.) |
| Delete | Delete the selected tracks (asks first) |
| Cmd + Return | Confirm in the Save to Playlist sheet |
| Cmd + S | Save pending edits (in the Wishlist tab) |
Every row also has the two classification buttons — the green check and the red cross — if you'd rather click.
Auto-advance is what makes this fast. After you classify the selected track, selection jumps to the next visible, unclassified track that's playable on your active streaming service — and starts playing it. Three details worth knowing:
- Auto-advance follows the list you're looking at: current filters, search, and sort included.
- It skips tracks that can't play on your active service (unresearched or not-found rows), so the loop never stalls on silence.
- If you change a filter and the current track disappears from view, CatchIt! moves you to the next eligible visible track rather than leaving playback orphaned.
You don't need to take your hands off the keyboard. Press, listen for a few seconds, decide, press again.
If you want to preview tracks while classifying, Research the scope first so the play buttons are live. You can also classify by title alone without listening — especially when the source gives you enough context.
Multi-select, bulk actions and delete
Click a row's Status, # or Track column to select it; Cmd+Click and Shift+Click build a selection. The other columns — Links, the classify buttons, Play and the rest — only do their own job and never change what's selected.
Bulk actions live in the right-click menu. With several rows selected you get Classify N Green, Classify N Red, Clear N Classifications, Copy N Tracks, Delete N Tracks…, Select All and Deselect All.
Delete removes captures you never want to see — mis-Shazams, duplicates from a noisy recording. Deleted Shazams are hidden rather than destroyed, and deleting a tracklist row also clears its search results and classification. Chart rows can't be deleted; they're part of the chart.
One rule keeps the keyboard loop safe: if you've selected rows that don't include the track that's playing, the first Enter or Space only scrolls back to the playing track. The next press classifies it.
Changed your mind?
There's no undo button, and you don't need one. Flip the Status filter to Keep or Reject to see what you've already classified in this scope, select the track, and press the other key — Enter flips a red to green, Space flips a green to red. Greens can also be demoted later from the Wishlist.
